DG is an artist’s book made of found materials from the garden. The covers are left over redwood pieces from an old sign that was cut apart to be used for another structure. DG is decomposed granite, a path material that has become the “text” in this book.

“Berberus” and “Lacteus II”

2 maintenance-sculptures completed over the past couple weeks: Lacteus II an octopus-like trunk with branches measuring 3 feet high, 4 feet wide and 6 feet long. The wood is Cotoneaster lacteus that was removed from the ridge near the parking structure at Blake Garden. When the bark is stripped from Cotoneaster, almost immediately the wood begins to turn a beautiful golden-brown. Berberus measures 12 in. high, 12 in. wide and 18 in. long. It’s from a Berberus shrub in the formal section at Blake that needed pruning. Insect-like with a lichen encrusted underbelly and hand-hewed back, it is currently hanging out at Blake with “Lacteus II”.

After a breaking for a couple of months, Rusty and I got together 2 Fridays ago at Blake Garden and collaborated on another intervention. This time we cutback several bundles of the weedy Maytenus boaria sprouts that have been coming up on the northern slope above the Australian Hollow. We then decided to create a temporary scaffold structure out of Maytenus triangles tied with jute to “support” a long limb that extends from a beautiful Quercus agrifolia in the lower part of the garden. We reached our goal by the days end, but almost immediately it began to sag and collapse. I returned the following Monday to find it almost completely down and in a tangle. So I cleaned up and untied the modules, bundling them up for future use.

“Lacteus I”

Lacteus I is a maintenance-sculpture that I finished last week at Blake Garden. It measures approximately 7 feet high by 10 feet in length. As a volunteer at Blake, I was asked to remove 2 medium-sized limbs from a cotoneaster near the event lawn. I found several dynamic associative gestures in the limbs, which were twisting around one another. Beyond pure form, this piece, hand-hewed with broad axe and chiseled, suggests that of a praying mantis, stick bug, or scorpion. It is currently sited on a hill near the event lawn.
